Untreated hot rolled steel can rust when exposed to moisture and oxygen. The dark mill scale formed during manufacturing offers limited temporary protection, but it should not be treated as a permanent protective coating. For outdoor or damp environments, the steel can be prepared and protected using suitable paint, primer, powder coating or another specified corrosion-control system.

Many commonly supplied hot rolled mild and structural steels have good weldability and are widely used in fabricated assemblies. The appropriate welding process and preparation will depend on the grade, thickness and application. Any mill scale, rust, oil or contamination around the weld area may need to be removed before welding.
