Aluminium is approximately one-third the density of steel, making it useful where reducing component weight is important. It also offers good corrosion resistance, thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity. Steel is generally stronger and stiffer for a given thickness, so the best material depends on the component’s load, environment, weight and fabrication requirements.

The correct aluminium alloy depends on the required strength, corrosion resistance, formability, weldability and surface finish. Commercially pure grades such as 1050A offer excellent formability and corrosion resistance, while 5000-series alloys are commonly selected when greater strength and weldability are required. Aluminium does not rust in the same way as ferrous steel because it contains no iron. It naturally develops a thin oxide layer that helps protect the underlying metal. However, aluminium can still corrode in aggressive environments or when it comes into contact with incompatible metals, chemicals or trapped moisture.

Selected aluminium sheet can be supplied with a removable protective film to help prevent scratches and surface damage during processing, handling and transport. This can be particularly useful for visible panels, enclosures and decorative components. Please specify any surface-finish or protective-film requirements when requesting a quotation.

Yes. Many aluminium alloys can be pressed, folded and formed, but performance depends on the alloy, temper, thickness, bend radius and rolling direction. Softer tempers are generally easier to form, while harder tempers may require a larger bend radius. Provide details of the finished component so that an appropriate material can be selected.
